I utterly love this Victoria’s Secret old-fashioned, ’50s-style bikini. The trouble is, do I love it on me?
On a younger woman, this suit would look adorably retro and saucy. But I am 43, and I fear I would simply look like someone who pulled it out of my elderly mother’s closet because I am too old and pathetic to find a bathing suit for a woman of my own generation.
I think I have the body type for it — I have a relatively small waist compared to my hips and thighs and nice enough knockers to carry off the top — but I just can’t decide whether it’s simply too young for me.
Thoughts?
See all sorts more slutty ….. errrrrrr, I mean sweet and saucy little bikinis at the Victoria’s Secret website.

First!!!!
Seriously, I am a fan of this suit with different bottoms. Having kissed 29 buh bye 4 years ago, I gotta say: retro is for young uns. This makes no sense, but it is truthy. Same top, skimpier bottoms, I tell you.

The thing with vintage swimsuits is that you have to do a bit of vintage accessorizing with them. I feel like you need a pair of vintage style sunglasses and maybe a scarf holding your hair back to pull off the whole look. Are you going for style or function? If this is a swimsuit for sunbathing in, I would say go for it. If you are looking for a suit that is for swimming, I would go for something more funtional. That’s just me. I have a vintage one-piece and I love it. But I don’t have your rockin bod, Trix, to carry off a bikini. Those are my two cents. I think it’s an amazing suit. I think your age is irrelevant here, but in the end, it’s what you feel comfortable wearing.

I love that suit!
Get it! You can always return it . . .

I love those vintage one-pieces, Skittles, I know exactly the ones you’re talking about. I am also tempted to get one of those.
And the big Jackie O. sunglasses, with the scarf tying back my hair, dainty little flip flops … good God, I might try it!
On a beach in Spain? I think it might work!

MBB: But what about the muffin tip that I am hoping to camouflage?
April 10, 2008 at 11:00 pm
I mean muffin TOP!!!

The suit is super cute, if you like yourself in it, I say rock it.
April 10, 2008 at 11:16 pm
lady, you are totally hot enough to pull this off. DO IT! You’ll be glam, and a saucy headscarf will disguise the chlorine and/or salt crusted in your hair. Fashion + function.

Trix, what is your torso length? If you have a relatively long torso it could be great for hiding love handles and such. If it is short you may want to look into a fab one piece a la Ester Williams if you are going for the retro look.

I am totally short-waisted! Maybe you’re right!

I think as long as you feel comfortable in it, go for it. Because honestly, you don’t look even remotely close to your age, so I think you could pull off a lot of things you may think you’re “too old” for.

My suit is an Esther Williams, and it is the best purchase I’ve ever made. She has vintage style bikinis as well, but I don’t like the style of them as much as I like this one.

Muffin top? You lie, Trix.
But see, I didn’t know you had a short torso. I have LOOOOOOONG torso, and that is why I shrink from suits like this.
Why don’t you buy it and post a pic so I can see your knees again?
April 11, 2008 at 2:01 pm
ooh trix, hot little suit.
wear it proudly.
April 11, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Trixie, you’re tiny enough that your muffin top IS only a muffin tip – if you have even that!
On the other end, you could wear surfer shorts, perhaps? They would keep you warm…oh, I’m the only one who feels cold all the time? I should wear a burkini…snort…

It’s dreamy. I was just looking at ‘em yesterday. You look at least 10 yrs. younger than you claim to be, also. Good luck with a suit; I’m still looking.

I agree with the accessorizing argument. I think the retro style is very “now” and you would look spectacular with the JAckie O sunglasses and the two-piecer.
..this summer in Nova Scotia!

I know!!! I can’t wait! I’ll try out the look in Spain, and then perfect it in NS!

@trixiefromtoronto: I have two swimsuits right now (oddly, it doesn’t come up that much in Scotland), and one of them is a super-retro one piece with a similar cut on the bottom to the one you have pictured, which I incidentally LOVE. I say, ROCK IT.
April 13, 2008 at 10:51 pm
hmmm, guess I’m going to have to go retro this summer too. I like the big-bottoms with the low cut legs. They cover a multitude of whateverz…
April 15, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Be a trendsetter, Trix! Buy the darned thing. Rock it hard. Watch others follow.
April 15, 2008 at 11:28 pm
may I just preface by saying that you are one of my favorite Defamer commenters. love love love your wit. ehm, with that…
I love the suit too – while I don’t think it matters how old you are, but when you wrote ‘muffintop’, you answered your own question.

Hi heatherr!
Thanks for your kind words!
So … muffin top? Would that bathing suit work to camouflage it? Or no?
