I have no fashion sense. None. I also have no beauty sense. I lack what people would refer to as “girly-ness.” I wear barely any makeup. I don’t do my hair. I don’t know how to apply liquid eyeliner. Don’t get me wrong. I get by. I can do the basics. Like jeans and a sweater. But to put an outfit together? That is what I would refer to as hell.
You see when I was growing up my mother wasn’t exactly Victoria Beckam. She wasn’t even Patricia Heaton and her sweater sets. She taught me nothing about being a “lady.” No makeup tips. No hair tips. Nothin’. I think some of it had to do with being brought up strict in a Hispanic household. I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup or even polish my nails until I was 16 (by that time my friends were experts), God forbid I look like a 15 year old hussy! But I can’t blame them forever.
I’m 28 now and still can barely get myself together. My sweet, wonderful and fashionable hubby tells me I’m free to spend money on beautification. But my aversion to fashion having been ingrained since childhood in combination with my horrifying anxiety when it comes to dealing with the people that can help me- hairdressers, makeup artists, department store workers- makes me stay in this state of suspended adolescence. I can’t even wear pointy shoes! I feel like I’m playing dress-up if I do. Obviously, it’s a mental block.
The good news is that I’m getting help! My network of girlfriends both beauty experts and Style Queens to help me get on my way to girly glory. They will make my skin glow, my hair shiny, and my shoes match my top! I’m excited. Being a girl sounds like fun!

You’re a hottie! I have never seen you but I know you are! You got yourself quite a husband no doubt.
I am right there with you about the household. My mom was like makeup queen but i wasnt allowed to wear any till 16. My mom still to this day can be woken up at 4am and she looks flawless.
I had this weird fascination with hair and makeup and obviously fashion to this day. I am basically blah now (the toddler gives me 2 minutes for makeup and i’m lucky to have curly hair so i leave it natural). But when I was in college and study fashion i was always with the cute outfits, funky accessories, etc.
Happy for you to have your gfs to help you out!

@Spicy Tamale:
Well your name says it all my dear! Today I bought a dress. At Old Navy. But it’s a start, right?

I have seen you in person and you are adorable. You couldn’t be MORE adorable. Explore your girly side if you must, but you look great as is.

How nice that you have some extra help. Don’t be afraid of fashion. There is something out there for everyone.
I do a Fashion Lesson each week on my blog Fashion Sensei if you want to check them out. This topic would make a great lesson. Let me know if it is ok to reference you and this post.
Best Wishes!

@Sensei:
That would be fabulous! What is your blog? We’ll add it to our roll. :)

You and I have never met, SinRoo, but the confidence and intelligence you exude is always going to be your best accessory. We are always hardest on ourselves when it comes to the beauty factor. Just remember, the best fashion stuff comes from ingenuity and cleverness (which you have in spades) and I’m guessing the acquaintances you have in your day-to-day are going to start asking you questions like, “Where did you get that skirt?” or “Who cuts your hair?”
Oh, and give your hubby a big *mwah* from me for being one of the evolved ones.

Hey sinisterrouge,
My blog is http://www.fashionsensei.wordpress.com
Sensei, being the Japanese word for teacher, my blog is aimed at those who want to know more about fashion.
My lesson for next week is set, but I would like to write about this post today in two weeks. I’ll keep you updated and may have some further questions for you.
Thanks!!

My mother sounds a lot like yours, but the Chinese version. Fortunately, I went through an extended period of punkish ennui and learned how to apply eyeliner. Meanwhile I’m still stealing my dad’s sweaters and wearing ripped jeans with pluggers (thongs, flip flops, whatever you want to call them) and for some reason no one at work seems to mind. They think I’m alternative and stylish, poor fools.

I love the fact that you come right out and say it like that. IT’s absolutely charming and confident. Who says no-style can’t be a style.

Fashion Sensei- your blog kicks ass. i am totally bookmarking it. It feels like centuries since college and I did personal shopping in Las Vegas for a while but gave it all up. I miss it. A Lot.

Hey Spicytamale, thanks so much for the compliment! There’s lots of good shopping in Vegas, you must have had a blast! :D

Love this!
Love the no-fashion, as I worship at that altar too. I tend to shop at Costco, Reitmans, and Targat when I’m in the US.
I’m going to Las Vegas next week and while my husband is at his nerd conference, baby and I will be hitting the aforementioned Costco, Target, maybe even a Gap outlet.
Fashion Sensei, your site is also excellent! Bookmarking now.

Firstly, sin, you are tres adorable, so don’t sweat it.
But, as someone who has been commissioned by numerous friends to do their accessories shopping for them, the secret is in the details. Get some cute costume jewelry (H+M, the sale rack at Macys, Forever 21, whatever) and have that be the focal point of an otherwise basic outfit. I rock basic work trousers and cardigans or t shirts in basic colors (mostly grey, black, green, purple) with some fun (and big!) earrings, chunky rings, or a cool necklace.
But I strictly abide by the rule of removing one piece of jewelry after I get dressed every morning to avoid overkill.
This plus my “I don’t give a fuck” attitude = awesomeness. At least in my own mind…

This is very true, Guvnah. All winter I wear pretty basic sweaters and jeans/slacks, but I add a lot of funky accessories, especially bracelets and necklaces, cute jackets and pointy-toed boots, which make your legs look longer (it’s really true what Stacy and Clinton say).
In the summer, same deal, but with T-shirts and tanks, maybe some skirts instead of jeans — funky accessories, cute jackets, cute shoes but the clothes? Pretty basic.
Dresses are big for me too. Sweater dresses in the winter — so warm and cozy plus it’s so nice just having one piece to throw on. Undies, tights, dress, boots. In the summer: undies, shoes, dress. Simple!!!
