Well now.  This is shaping up to be a nasty piece of business (and one the Packer Faithful can argue over the beginnings of for years to come).  Over the weekend the AP reported an interview with Green Bay Packers GM Ted Thompson and head coach Mike McCarthy in which the Packers stated they would not release Brett Favre as requested, but would welcome him back in a different role.  What that role might be was not qualified but the Packers confirmed their intention to proceed into the upcoming season with 4th year quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the starting slot.  Thompson and McCarthy also spent some time yammering about their “concerns” about whether or not Favre still had the commitment to play football, a notion I find more and more laughably insulting the more I hear it.  When have you ever known Brett Favre not to play at 110%???  He holds the record for most consecutive fucking starts, you dumbshit.

There’s also this additional bit of vacillating being talked about now, (courtesy of this interview) where Thompson and McCarthy say they were supposed to meet with Favre in MS mere days after his retirement in March to confirm the QB’s return to Green Bay, only to have Favre cancel the meeting.

Regardless if this is true or not, the only reason to release this kind of information is to make Favre look bad, like he’s some ashy old fart who can’t decide which line to get in at the bank.  Tacky, very, very tacky.

ESPN reports that tonight Favre will be responding via an interview with Fox News’ “On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.”  And this is the part that caught my eye, “And while Favre said the Packers asked him for a list of teams to which he would accept a trade, he wants to be released to make sure he ends up on a competitive club.”   That to me, says he damn sure knows who he doesn’t want to play for which means he probably knows where he does want to go.

Stay tuned….
