Ok, Americans, whether you voted early, you’re in line to vote right now or you’re going to chance it and vote after work – do the damn thang. Today is unquestionably an historic day, and unfortunately we Buttercups couldn’t chuck our regular jobs to create an extra special post for it, but you know we wouldn’t leave you without a place to talk about it. We’ll keep this post at the top of the page for the next 24hrs, so as the results come in, tell us what you think about it!

I have cast my vote in the safely blue state of NY! I was in and out in maybe 30 minutes, since I waited until after the pre-work rush.
November 4, 2008 at 10:46 am
I threw my Democratic needle into the big, red South Carolina haystack! Futility never felt so good.
November 4, 2008 at 10:51 am
I threw my Democratic vote into the abyss of NC on Monday. I luvs early voting!!
November 4, 2008 at 10:53 am
I’m giddy.
NJ is one of the few states that doesn’t allow early voting, so I waited in line like a good Amurrican for 2 hours this morning! Now I’m at work and I can’t function, I’m so damn excited.

WE NEED A UNITER
NOT A MURDERER
OBAMA’S BUDDIES PLANNED TO KILL 25,000,000 AMERICANS
FACTS, JUST FACTS, ONLY FACTS
THAT SHOULD SCARE EVERYONE

Spotted at a polling place in the San Francisco Bay Area, a young African-American man casting his first ballot at 7:15 am with a huge smile on his face. Whatever happens today, that makes it all worth while.
November 4, 2008 at 11:12 am
Where is Paisley? Woman, you and I are those two little blue dots in the Lone Star state of red. YAH!
oh, and trolls will not be tolerated – you get exactly one warning.
November 4, 2008 at 11:17 am
I have butterflies!
November 4, 2008 at 11:18 am
NGoldgarb: Are you the asshole who wouldn’t give the kids their Halloween candy?
Hey … the nuthouse is a few blogs over, at the Free Republic website. Go on now — you’ll feel at home there.
November 4, 2008 at 11:26 am
Wow I voted at my Brooklyn polling place and actually had to wait in line – thats never happened to me before! Everyone was really happy though, and the poll worker even reminded me to go get my free starbucks and Ben & jerry’s. I can’t really focus on work right now! I just want to wake up tomorrow and look forward to Obama being our next President!
Also – you guys should check this out, it’s insane:

November 4, 2008 at 11:36 am
The hubby voted for Obama-Lord have mercy! My conservative republican broke ranks and went this morning to vote for Obama. His reason? He couldn’t believe McCain picked such a whack job for VP. That and I think he’s got a crush on Michelle Obama, he heard a speech she gave a few days ago and has been raving about her ever since. Can’t blame him, I’m crushin’ on her myself. And the 14 yr. old made an Obama cake for his Civics class today, raisin’ them all good…
November 4, 2008 at 11:49 am
@h_a_l: Alas, it looks like the twitter thing is down at the moment.
November 4, 2008 at 12:43 pm
@ cate : Yeah it’s been on and off all day- but it’s a pretty good picture of what’s happening out there – longest wait times, worst organization, etc.
November 4, 2008 at 12:58 pm
My sister just called me, she is sooo excited!!
They have paper ballots in AZ. She said that when she was turning her ballot in, the lady leaned in to see who she voted for. She said that she gave her a massive eyeroll and snatched the “I voted” sticker from her.
November 4, 2008 at 1:15 pm
i just voted for change! the whole thing took 5 minutes. i’m feeling good.
November 4, 2008 at 1:26 pm
Waited two hours to cast my vote in Boston this morning. Everyone was pleasant and the sun was out, so really, it was rather nice. Also, I brought coffee, so that helped.
November 4, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Mmm. I just got my free ice cream on my way to work. Tasty! And some Girl Scouts were set up nearby, so I bought some Thin Mints too. I feel all patriotic. And full.
November 4, 2008 at 1:45 pm
AYL: Your first ever vote! I’m so proud.
November 4, 2008 at 2:32 pm
I was so excited to get up and vote this morning, I fairly sprang from my mattress in elation at 5:45 AM. Weeeeeeeeeeee! It was maybe a 45 minute affair to get in, vote, and get out. It was my first actual vote in an actual voting booth.
November 4, 2008 at 2:57 pm
I voted on Friday in NC, which I hope turns a pretty shade of blue today.
And that asshole ngoldfarb has been trolling on my blog too. GO AWAY MORON!
November 4, 2008 at 3:01 pm
i waited 1.5 hours to vote, and i’m wearing a blue tie!!
November 4, 2008 at 3:04 pm
They don’t give you “I voted” stickers in MA. So I went to CVS and bought myself some American flag stickers. Because I am a dork.
Went right after lunch, so not too crowded, but still more crowded than I’ve ever seen it. People here are reporting waits of 2 hours during the busier times.
People, I’m pumped. This might actually happen.
November 4, 2008 at 3:17 pm
MissCricket: I beg to differ on one point…the league of women voters in my suburb on the South Shore was giving out little “I voted” stickers. But I have to say, flag stickers on your own impetus is actually a better, in a cute and dorky way (from one dork to another).
November 4, 2008 at 3:29 pm
I only had to wait about 1/2 an hour in NYC.
And I’m also tempted to become a poll worker next time. While waiting in line (a line that was mainly due to absolutely useless poll workers), one man wasn’t found in the book. When he said he was registered and last voted in 2004, she actually told him he had been thrown off the rolls! She wouldn’t even give him a provisional ballot, and told him that he had to to go to the borough office of the Board of Elections to vote. NOT TRUE! Arg.
Also, heard that in San Francisco, one polling place ran out of ballots for a while – here’s to lots of “No on Prop 8” votes.
November 4, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Congrats to all you voters! You rock, ladies!
As for me, I’m on the couch with a 1.5 litre bottle of red wine, a bag of chips, tons of chocolate to make chocolate fondue AND bananas and cake to dip into the chocolatey goodness.
I’m in it for the long haul, bitches!
(It’s already 10PM here, see, so I need stuff to keep me going)
November 4, 2008 at 4:14 pm
@haguenite: Yeah, 10pm here too. I may take a nap and set the alarm for 3 am, like I did for Obama’s acceptance speech. Meanwhile, I’ve got a bottle of Freixinet Cordon Negro in the fridge, some nice weed, and a recently temporarily adopted cat to keep me company. The local Democrats Abroad is having a party, but I can’t stay on my feet until 5 or 6 when the results will be in here in Spain. And between us all, I just know I’ll cry my eyes out when the good news is announced. I’m 53, and I’ve been waiting for this since I was 13. Motherfkers killed Bobby Kennedy and stole THAT election. This is our time.
And after staying up all night, I’ll go out early, early, have breakfast and for the first time in 8 years, look forward to the day.
November 4, 2008 at 4:20 pm
@London_Calling ARGH! What that poll worker did is totally illegal! He should have demanded a provisional ballot and called the election protection hot line. And this in NYC!
You guys I am so READY for Obamarama no more Joe the Plumber Hockey mom crap. My boss predicts they will call it by 8pm and I hope he’s right. My pregnant ass is not going to make it much past 11pm tonight… I’m gonna make my sister call me and wake me up if it happens past my bedtime.
November 4, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Woke up early this morning and happily stood in line for two hours with my best friend, doing our part to keep NJ that beautiful shade of dark blue. Got to work late, but my boss was just happy I voted (and voted Dem).
Now all day I’ve been reading heartwarming voting stories online and trying to control the massive horde of butterflies in my stomach. YES WE CAN. (please? pretty please?)
November 4, 2008 at 4:23 pm
hmmm, I can’t decide if I want to be at haguenite’s right now or at SarahHeartburn’s.
@h_a_l: girl, how did I not know you were preggers?? you have probably mentioned it and I missed it (so sorry) – Congrats!!
November 4, 2008 at 4:27 pm
@h_a_l : What a great time to be pregnant!! An Obama generation baby! Congratulations!
November 4, 2008 at 4:36 pm
@Sarahheartburn – your Bobby Kennedy reference just brought tears to my eyes.
November 4, 2008 at 4:40 pm
@SH: Yeah, I’ll probably nod off during the night anyway, but the general plan is to stay up until McCain gives a concession speech and Obama a victory speech.
@kadinsky: Well, Sarah may have weed but I live around the corner from several coffeeshops. And as those familiar with Dutch culture know, coffeeshops don’t sell just coffee! As for me, I can’t get high (believe me, I’ve tried), so I’m going for alcohol!
November 4, 2008 at 5:20 pm
I’m watching some Dutch coverage right now, and it’s AWESOME! Dutch people can be a bit blunt, and there are lots of McCain supporters sitting at the table thinking they’re being called racists. And one of them was all “Well, this must be a racist show because you have a mainly white audience…” FIGHTFIGHTFIGHT!
Oh! The preacher pulled a muslim son in law out of a hat. OBAMA’S NOT MUSLIM. STOP IT, ASSHOLE!
November 4, 2008 at 5:29 pm
i voted last week so i am about to make cupcakes- democratic cupcakes. and i am breaking my bottle of champagne we recieved on our wedding day if Obama wins. my husband doesnt like the stuff. plus it gets me drunk and handsy. yay!
November 4, 2008 at 5:46 pm
Cupcakes, yum! One of the Dutch talking heads is scaring me. STOP with the banter about the January New Hampshire primary okay!?
Indiana: 73% of young voters showed up, or 73% of young voters have voted Obama? The news is a bit hazy…
November 4, 2008 at 6:28 pm
I’m so excited and nervous, I’ve had an Election Day Eyelid Spasm going strong all day. Still twitching, too. Hoping the drinks make it stop!
November 4, 2008 at 6:33 pm
I threw my blue votes into the little blue pond of Delaware! Voted for Biden twice :~D
November 4, 2008 at 6:38 pm
I voted last week…I like seeing Arizona in the pink (or gray, accd to CNN, 46% Obama, 50% McCain). There is still hope for my adopted state!
November 4, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Going home after work for Pub Cheese, champagne, apple pie and CNN Election Center. It won’t be real until I hear it from The Coop. See you ladies after 8 pm ET.
November 4, 2008 at 6:48 pm
My sad little state that produced the last Dem president is all red this year, but I voted last week anyway. Then resisted the urge to go all Daily Show on voters I talked to today.
Polls don’t close for nearly two hours here, so I have to sit on my pretty butt and wait, then go down to the courthouse and wait some more. No way all the local stuff will be in by deadline, but I have to wait anyway. So it goes. Gonna stay at the office a while longer, though, since we have TV here.
November 4, 2008 at 7:10 pm
I VOTED in Brooklyn for OBAMA, woot woot. I am sooo proud of myself, I could cry.
November 4, 2008 at 7:28 pm
We just got back from Krispy Kreme, getting our free election doughnuts. Democracy never tasted so good!
November 4, 2008 at 7:55 pm
voted in Brooklyn! took about 45 mins this morning. but the line moved well and the poll worker was helpful and took time to explain the machine to everyone that voted.
November 4, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Voted early so I could hand out no on Prop 8 stuff all day but alas, I had to stop at 4pm cuz I am sick as a dog. I have a good feeling y’all; hope I’m right.
November 4, 2008 at 8:06 pm
My stomach is in knots, we just cannot afford another 4 years of rebug crap! C’mon Obama buddy! CNN is being way too conservative in it’s projections-dammit!
November 4, 2008 at 8:09 pm
@Fairhaired Optimist : even with conservative estimates, things look good!
November 4, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Polls just closed here about 20 minutes ago. DON’T FAIL ME, YOU MISSOURI BITCHES!
November 4, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Missouri- don’t fail T&U!
November 4, 2008 at 8:45 pm
Also, fucking CNN call fucking states already. Also, I’m 100% sure everyone can call NY.
November 4, 2008 at 8:52 pm
I’m really happy that Obama is leading, but the various propositions are bumming me out – http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/ballot.measures/
Why won’t people let teh gayz marry and adopt babies?! Live and let live, people!
November 4, 2008 at 8:55 pm

Ughh, NC is looking too red for my liking ya’ll. This is going to be CLOSE. DottyZ, where you iz?!
November 4, 2008 at 8:59 pm
Right now, it looks like McCain is ahead in MO. :( I’m still wearing my Obama Show Me Change shirt, though.
November 4, 2008 at 8:59 pm
But you got rid of Liddy Dole, GreenEye (I totally forgot that she was even in the Senate; what has she done for you lately?)
November 4, 2008 at 9:00 pm
McCain won Kansas??????!!!!!!!!!!!! NO WAY!!!!!
November 4, 2008 at 9:01 pm
@truculent: But don’t the results from the bigger cities tend to come in later? *crosses fingers, considers taking up prayer*
November 4, 2008 at 9:02 pm
cate–St. Louis is notoriously slow, so I’m still hopeful. I was talking to my mother-in-law, who was working the polls, and she said that turnout seemed extremely high this year. Since we’re in a college town, I take that as a good sign.
November 4, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Also, the polls have only been closed for an hour here, so it’s quite possible (as my husband just pointed out) that St. Louisians are still voting.
November 4, 2008 at 9:14 pm
MBB #54: She hasn’t done a damn thing for anyone outside of the Charlotte banking circles. Talk about asleep at the wheel, she was on the Senate Banking/Finance Committee…’nuff said.
It’s time for her to pack it up, and head back to her Watergate apartment w/Bob and his Viagra.
November 4, 2008 at 9:23 pm
OHIOOOOOOOo
November 4, 2008 at 9:25 pm
I am well pleased. But what about Prop 8? I need to know it was shot down, then I can go to bed. And I really want to go to bed.
November 4, 2008 at 9:30 pm
@t&u: SHOCKING!
November 4, 2008 at 9:30 pm
O-HI-O bitches!
November 4, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Mayor–I know, right? And Pat Roberts is holding his seat. CRAZAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Honestly, I forgot that Roberts was still alive. *eep*
November 4, 2008 at 9:46 pm
The NC map on CNN is looking scary red ya’ll.
November 4, 2008 at 9:57 pm

November 4, 2008 at 10:00 pm
I’m hearing that the Marriage Protection Act in Florida passed…
November 4, 2008 at 10:03 pm
Damn. We won’t get our 60 Senators. Close, but no cigar.
November 4, 2008 at 10:06 pm
Myrtle, CA polls close in a little less than an hour. Hang in there!
November 4, 2008 at 10:07 pm
Damnit, Gavin Newsom is making me like him. A lot. STOPIT.
November 4, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Thanks, mllejanine, I will.
Here’s a ballot measures tracker for those who are interested:
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/results/ballot.measures/
November 4, 2008 at 10:37 pm
If y’all are looking for seriously good election results, I suggest this foogle on the google: Your State Election Results USA Today
They have these amazing maps that pop up with up-to-the minute results with comparisons made to 2004 as well as the ability to roll your cursor over your county to see how people voted numbers-wise. Breakdowns according to race, ethnicity and age are really informative here in Tejas.
November 4, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Still waiting for AZ and VA…
November 4, 2008 at 10:50 pm
at this point we don’t even need FLA! With CA, WA, OR we’ll have 73. plus the 207 Obama already has, it’s in the BAG!
November 4, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Sparkle, it would be nice if 2 counties in NC could hurry up and count their damn stone tablets so we know where we stand in this state!!! I’d really like to see those 15 votes go BLUE.
November 4, 2008 at 11:00 pm

November 4, 2008 at 11:15 pm
Okay, I’m going to head to bed soon, otherwise I’ll start anxiously refreshing CNN’s ballot measures page. That’s not looking as good, but hopefully I’ll wake up to good news.
November 4, 2008 at 11:23 pm
Is anyone watching the concession speech? It’s terrifying.
November 4, 2008 at 11:26 pm
@Truculent: Because I’m totally unable to go to bed, I’m watching it. It started off fine, but now… eh.
Man, I wish Obama’s grandma could have lived just a little longer to see this day.
November 4, 2008 at 11:32 pm
What’s up w/No on 8??
November 4, 2008 at 11:34 pm

November 5, 2008 at 12:43 am
I feel like the Grinch, post heart-expansion! Part of me was holding back, not daring to dive full-on into the Hope Pool. I’m glad my pessimism was proven wrong! What a moment!
November 5, 2008 at 1:15 am
First facebook status update from a friend after obama’s speech: “rebecca wonders about obama’s citizenship”. Cunt! Defriended, tout de suite.
November 5, 2008 at 1:25 am
TODAY IS A NEW DAY!
November 5, 2008 at 2:13 am
Well, I’m a late SOB! Hello. M has her “DEFEAT PROP 8” PJ pants on and I am still sort of reverberating from Obama’s win tonight.
1. As great as Obama is, he cannot have our puppy.
2. Gavin Newsom: Don’t even bother trying to resist his charm and that greasy, floppy thick of shiny hair. It’s no use. Best to just go limp and ride it out, you know? Trust.
November 5, 2008 at 8:23 am
trixxxxie, where ARE you?
November 5, 2008 at 10:56 am
Joy!!! I woke up this morning to find that my state, my state that hasn’t gone blue since Lyndon Johnson, went to Obama. Tears of pure joy. That speech last night was pitch perfect.
November 5, 2008 at 11:56 am
Fuck. Total bittersweet morning y’all. Goddamnit California.
